Last night was a tough one for #TeamInternet. Bethany Mota, the YouTube superstar who brought all her best moves to the stage of Dancing With The Stars, was eliminated from the competition last night after making it all the way to the final four. Naturally we’re disappointed that Bethany didn’t make it all the way to the finals and take home the trophy for team YouTube, but we’re totally impressed with her performance. Bethany and her DWTS coach Derek Hough managed to shimmy their way through 11 weeks of competition, shutting down rivals like Olympian Lolo Jones and Mean Girls star Jonathan Bennett.
Unfortunately even Bethany’s perky good nature and determination weren’t enough to overcome America’s obsession with the Carlton Dance. Bethany’s departure left Pretty Little Liars actress Janel Parrish and Sadie Robertson, a young woman who is famous because A&E has neither scruples nor shame, to compete against the contest’s ultimate champion, Alfonso Ribeiro, better known as TV’s Carlton Banks of Fresh Prince of BelAir fame.
Bethany may not have made it to the final round of The Hunger Games: Dance Edition but she broke major new ground as the first YouTube personality to compete on the show. Not only did her performance warrant a long stay on the DWTS stage but she managed to win the support of new audiences. The viewer make-up of Dancing With The Stars is decidedly older and more traditional than the audience Bethany typically draws with her YouTube channel. Her long tenure on the show proves that either she was able to draw a big chunk of her audience to the show or that her charm is not limited to the computer screen. Either way Bethany’s performance is a big win for the YouTube community and almost certainly a sign that more YouTubers will soon be crossing over into the mainstream.
