Recasting Movies With YouTubers: MockingJay (Part One)

Since we’re weekend warriors now, it only makes sense that we break from the pack and engage in some rampant free-thinking. Pretty soon YouTube and Hollywood should completely merge and we will be seeing our favorite YouTubers starring in our favorite TV shows and movies. Of course, until that point, we can only speculate on what might have been had this merger happened 10, 20 or 500 years ago. So every weekend, we take a pop culture movie and recast it with YouTubers who we think might have worked perfectly in that role.

This week: Mockingjay.

The story of a peasant girl turned into her community’s best hope for a warrior, Suzanne Collins’ hit trilogy The Hunger Games has blown up on screen with Jennifer Lawrence playing heroine Katniss Everdeen. The third book, Mockingjay, has been split into two movies, and with Jennifer currently being the poster child of the seemingly endless Fappening, she’s a little too controversial right now. So here’s how NMR would recast Mockingjay’s lead characters:

Katniss Everdeen

Played in the movie by: Jennifer Lawrence
Played in our version by: Kendall Jones

Katniss is the frank, serious heroine of the Hunger Games series. She’s a sister first, but also a true asskicker with serious archery skills to back her up. With that logic in mind, we choose the truly controversial Kendall Jones. She’s fairly new to the YouTube landscape, but the Texas cheerleader-turned-hunting-channel-star has the guts, the skills and the accuracy to play The Girl On Fire. With this third installment, Katniss has survived two other outings, but this one is going to be her toughest challenge yet, so you’d want a tried and true hunter picking up Katniss’ bow here. And before you get all huffy about Kendall killing animals, remember that Katniss kills people. So adjust your priorities, hater. And if you need more convincing, both Katniss and Kendall start with a K — and have the same number of letters. Spooky.

Peeta Mellark

Played in the movie by: Josh Hutcherson
Played in our version by: Gabe Hohreiter

Peeta is the handsome/sensitive type. He basically gets saved by Katniss all throughout the series and is only alive through her grace and determination. But he isn’t without bravery or skills — so we needed someone who could step into that role and not overwhelm or be offput by Katniss’ badassery. Enter Gabe. A real-life sidekick to Toby Turner, Gabe is handsome, but has no problem playing second fiddle. Plus, he seems like he needs to get rescued a lot.

Gale Hawthorne

Played in the movie by: Liam Hemsworth
Played in our version by: FPSRussia

This is the perfect pairing with Kendall Jones as Katniss — who else but FPSRussia could embody the guy who brings out Katniss’ feminine side? He’s handled way more weapons than Kendall, has blown up all kinds of stuff and has dealt with an ATF raid — Kendall wouldn’t feel like she was the more macho one in the relationship. She could be her feminine self and the two of them could talk guns ALL DAY LONG.

Haymitch Abernathy

Played in the movie by: Woody Harrelson
Played in our version by: John Green

Who but the sensible Vlogbrother could step into the role of the smart, successful mentor to Katniss? He’s survived the Hunger Games himself (through cunning and trickery rather than heroism) and now lives the good life as a bonafide celebrity/mentor to younger tributes. Sounds like John Green to us. Look, he’s not a drunk (probably), but there is more to Haymitch than that — look within yourselves and you will know it is true.

Effie Trinket

Played in the movie by: Elizabeth Banks
Played in our version by: Elizabeth Banks

The mainstream Hollywood star is perfectly cast as Effie, the material girl, obsessed by wealth and fame and the trappings of luxury. Perhaps another controversial choice because you wanted us to choose one of the style/makeup gurus for this role, it happens to work out because Elizabeth is one of the few mainstream celebrities who is also a YouTube celebrity. Running her channel, appropriately called Elizabeth Banks, Elizabeth answers the pressing questions you want to know about life. Of course, if you absolutely feel offended and cheated that we chose Elizabeth to play her own original part, just close your eyes and think about how perfect Olga Kay would be as Effie Trinket.

President Snow

Played in the movie by: Donald Sutherland
Played in our version by: Harley Morenstein

Is this a “beard thing”? In a word, yes. But it’s also because Harley has the size and intimidation to be the head baddie who controls the Hunger Games and makes kids fight to the death for amusement. The man is an ode to the excesses of life — and Harley personifies that on YouTube. Hell, I can’t think of anyone on YouTube who would be better suited for this role. The beard just seals the deal.

Primrose Everdeen

Played in the movie by: Willow Shields
Played in our version by: JennXPenn

The little sister. She is goodness and light — too wholesome to survive the Hunger Games, so Katniss takes her place in the first book/film. Though she later gets all solemn and sad, she would be perfectly played by someone from the AwesomenessTV stables. A young creator like JennXPenn would do good here. She’s more subdued and calm than many of her contemporaries, giving off that sense of youthful maturity. She could learn a lot from having Kendall Jones as her big sister.
