As expected, the YouTube charts have already begun to reflect the turmoil in the United States, following the Ferguson Grand Jury Decision. Both President Obama’s statement and video footage of the ensuing protests are trending this morning as America grapples with the decision. Still the YouTube charts turn slower than public opinion, so while Ferguson news is already starting to surface less than 24 hours after the decision it’s pop music that again carries the day.

Eminem claimed the number one spot with his latest single “Guts Over Fear” while performances from Iggy Azalea, One Direction, and Selena Gomez at the American Music Awards all trended upward. One Direction delivered a live version of “Night Changes” the first single off their new album Four, while Selena Gomez debuted “Heart Wants What It Wants,” her latest release which is heavily rumored to reference her relationship with troubled pop-star Justin Beiber. Iggy Azalea also managed to trend with a heavily lip-synced mash-up performance of her summer hit Fancy alongside Charli XCX. Outside of the AMAs, Beyoncé’s latest offering “7/11” climbed to number 18 and Ariana Grande continued to slowly absorb Mariah Carey’s life-force by parking her Christmas single “Santa Tell Me” at number 17.

The pros of comedy helped to to lighten the mood even further with both John Oliver and comic duo Key and Peele grabbing spots on the top 20. John Oliver issued a web short on the peculiar custom of Turkey Pardoning to tide over audiences while his hit HBO show “Last Week Tonight” is on winter hiatus. All that plus weekend holdovers like Katy Perry and the Jurassic World trailer left little room for YouTubers in the Top 20, but Hank Green’s SciShow managed to grab the number six spot while Whistle Sports trick shot duo Dude Perfect checked in at number 3.

Closing out the top 20 is the teaser trailer for the long-awaited fifth installment of the Etrian Odyssey series “Labyrinth Of The World Tree.” Game maker Altus dropped the trailer yesterday ending over two years of speculation.
