To the surprise of no one, the hotly anticipated Jurassic World trailer grabbed the top spot on the YouTube charts today. Fans were pumped to get their first real look at the film, although some critics have complained that the trailer gives too much away, revealing too much of the CGI that will make or break the film. Also climbing to the top of the charts is the teaser trailer for Pan, the dark and gritty Peter Pan reboot that no one really asked for. Critics have praised the exciting visuals, but the trailer is already drawing criticism for casting the very white Rooney Mara rather than an actress of color in the role of Princess Tiger Lily.
Also in heavy rotation is Jennifer Aniston, who’s been making the interview rounds ahead of her new movie Horrible Bosses 2. Aniston features in two bits that made the top 20 today, a jokey interview in which she intimidates a BBC 1 correspondent and a Jimmy Kimmel bit in which she competes in a curse-off with former Friends castmate Lisa Kudrow.
More content from Ferguson, Missouri is finally climbing that charts in the wake of the grand jury’s decision not to indict Darren Wilson. Footage from the ensuing protests as well as speeches by community leaders and the president have all landed in the top 20. Independent news outlets are doing particularly well reporting aspects of the crisis that aren’t being adequately covered by traditional media.
Finally, today finds some YouTube natives climbing back into the top 20. Rhett and Link hit number eight with “Will It Popsicle” the latest episode of their blockbuster show Good Mythical Morning while the trick-shot masters of Dude Perfect held onto #12. Today’s charts also saw the debut of “Sledgehammer,” the latest single from girl-group Fifth Harmony. While they’re not YouTubers, the X-Factor runners-up are definitely YouTube adjacent. The band has been heavily marketed to the YouTube community through a partnership with AwesomenessTV and appearances at Digitour. The end result is that the girls are way more popular on the ‘tubes than they are on terrestrial radio, but their latest release is a jam so we don’t mind.
