Iggy Azalea Is VEVO’s Music Video Queen of 2014

Iggy Azalea may have been the subject of the year’s best Twitter burn last night when frequent tweeter and occasional rapper Azalea Banks labeled her “Igloo Australia,” but the “Fancy” singer is probably too busy celebrating a slightly more important milestone. According to VEVO Iggy is the owner of the year’s biggest music video. The video for her breakout single Fancy, which featured flawless remakes of the most iconic scenes from 90’s film classic Clueless, is the biggest hit of the year with over 138 million views in the U.S. and 381 million worldwide.

Close behind Iggy was my personal nemesis Meghan Trainor whose viral hit “All About That Bass” infected screens world wide earning 131 million views in the U.S. and 331 million domestically. The full list includes Katy Perry’s “Dark Horse,” Taylor Swift’s 1989 earworm “Shake It Off”, Nicki Minaj’s “Anaconda,” Ariana Grande’s “Problem” which also featured Iggy Azalea, Sia’s “Chandelier,” “Rich Gang” by Lifestyle, “Loyal” by noted Rihanna puncher Chris Brown, and Sam Smith’s “Stay With Me.” End of year rankings may not seem hugely important, especially in today’s fractured music industry, but the video views VEVO is tracking have a huge impact on artists’ careers.

All About That Bass – Meghan Trainor

Since MTV stopped airing music videos and completed its evolution into a name brand in reality television, some music fans have wondered if the age of video might be coming to an end. The answer, it seems, is an unequivocal no. Music videos have found a new and perhaps more important home online. Since Billboard now includes YouTube views to the equation when calculating the Hot 100, a killer video can be the key to breaking an on-the-rise artist into the mainstream. Iggy herself can thank YouTube for catapulting “Fancy” onto the Hot 100 and onto radios nationwide. Likewise, “All About That Bass” didn’t gain traction until the video, which accentuated Trainor’s unconventional-for-a-popstar look, went viral.
