There’s always one theme that dominates the top 20 and today that theme is Movember, more specifically the end of the month-long charity beard growing season to benefit men’s health. In the number one spot YouTuber Mehdi Sadahgdar attempts several ill-advised experiments to remove his no-shave November mustache. We don’t recommend using lighter fluid or a taser to remove your Movember scruff, but you do you, man, live your life. YouTube National also took on the end of No-Shave November with a Taylor Swift parody “Shave It Off.” The song is just catchy as the original and featured a horde of YouTubers including Michele Glavan, Steve Zaragoza, Mike Falzone, Josh Parker, Brock Baker, Joey Salinas, Simon Mendoza, and Ryan Johnson.
Not surprisingly Star Wars remained popular with the trailer for Episode VII clocking in at number 8 three spots behind a parody that lampoons original director George Lucas. Also charting today, not one but two Lego remakes. Today also marks the first day in over a week that that the Top 10 was completely Jurassic World free. In it’s place, a trailer for AMC’s upcoming Breaking Bad spin-off Better Call Saul.
With memories of Ferguson still fresh in the national consciousness, a troubling video has surfaced on the count down. The video features an encounter between a Michigan man named Brandon McKean and a police officer. The officer stops and questions McKean, who is African American, because he “had his hands in his pockets” and was “making (neighborhood residents) nervous.” In the most telling sign of our times both men record the encounter on their iPhones ostensibly for their own protection. The video is going viral today raising more questions about police conduct and the need for body cameras.
Rounding out the countdown is an ad produced by Tobii Eye Experience, an optics firm working with Pizza Hut to create an interactive menu that reads subconscious eye movements to guess what customers want. In this form the technology makes for a great parlor trick, determining what users want to eat by measuring how long their eyes linger on images of available pizza toppings. We’ll just leave it at that rather than spend too much time imagining other, more sinister applications for a technology that can read minds.
