The YouTube Daily Top 20 – 12/4/14

NMR is constantly monitoring the YouTube charts, tracking what’s on the rise and who’s falling out of favor. Our Daily Top 20 gives you the 20 videos that are reigning supreme at the top of our charts so you can stay one step ahead of what’s hot.

Its no surprise that topping the charts today is DJ Earworm’s “United States of Pop,” an annual remix of the hottest top 40 pop songs. The mashup has become yearly pop culture tradition and this year’s version doesn’t disappoint, managing to capture some of the year’s best hooks and call-outs and successfully fuse a year’s worth of pop jams into one slick banger. Coming in at number two, another remix of something that was once popular: the teaser trailer for Terminator: Genisys hit YouTube yesterday giving us a taste of what to expect from the latest installment of that franchise. It’s obviously going to be very cool; the title spells the word “genesis’ with a “y” which, as anyone knows, is the coolest thing you can do in spelling.

Fortunately, here in the real world, the rise of the machines has been delayed by the introduction of a new and more sophisticated form of CAPTCHA. The latest iteration of the deeply annoying anti-spam bot puzzles was introduced in a video from Google Webmasters that quickly climbed to number four on the charts. Don’t rest too easy though: the number three spot is currently held by known robot Jimmy Fallon and his special guest, nightly news cyborg Brian Williams.

Further down the charts, YouTube friendly girl group Fifth Harmony borrowed Arianna Grande’s Mariah Carey voodoo doll long enough to record a cover of “All I Want For Christmas Is You.” And if all you want for Christmas is more covers of that song, then Ten Second Songs delivers in a big way, covering the modern holiday classic in 20 different styles in just four minutes. If you’re dying for even more Christmas, Straight No Chaser returns to the charts with the official music video for “Text Me Merry Christmas” featuring the vocal stylings of the aggressively charming Kristen Bell.

Closing out the charts today at number twenty is an Arby’s ad featuring Pepsi because brands <3 brands 4ever.
