Sometimes I have to comb through the recesses of YouTube to find junked videos and forgotten footage that is just amazing. Sometimes it comes to me. I am the YouTube Treasure Hunter. Every week, I brave spider videos, footage of tornadoes and the occasional inexplicable zit-popping upload to find some of the rarest jewels YouTube has to offer.
Oh, there’s gold in them thar hills, but sometimes you just have to wade through a ton of crap to get to it.
This week’s treasure? The full film of Little Monsters starring Fred Savage and Howie Mandel. Did you forget this was a thing? Most people did. Yup, before Lady Gaga stole the phrase, it was the title of one of the most fanciful kid films of all time. Fred Savage was pretty much neck and neck with Anthony Michael Hall and Molly Ringwald for biggest star in the 80s. And considering we just recast The Breakfast Club, this makes this weekend something of a nostalgia fest for you older readers. For you younger readers, you are going to friggin’ love the magic of Little Monsters. The story of a brother having to go down into the world of monsters to rescue his brother played very heavily with a young Jeff Klima’s head. And so now, with it inexplicably being a part of YouTube’s catacombs, it makes it the perfect inclusion for this episode of YouTube Treasure Hunter. Fall in love all over again, or fall in love for the first time. As for the question of whether it holds up? I couldn’t say — I haven’t watched it yet. Yeah, I suck.
Okay, now, having watched it again … um, well. All I can say is that YouTube Treasure Hunter does not apologize nor offer refunds on your time.
Stay tuned for next Sunday, treasure hunters! I’ve got something that really rocks! No, it isn’t a rock … you’ll just have to tune in.
