Something shady is apparently in the works over at the CENTCOM Twitter and YouTube pages … either we’ve decided to join allegiances with Muslim terrorist cell ISIS, or the Defense Department’s Middle East pages have been hacked.
The hack — and it is a hack, we haven’t gone rogue — occurred today and though the government isn’t talking, it seems to be more the work of terrorist hackers than, say, a recently fired government contractor.
“We can confirm that the U.S. Central Command’s Twitter and YouTube accounts were compromised earlier today,” said a Defense official speaking on condition of anonymity to USA Today because they were not authorized to speak publicly. “We are taking appropriate measures to address the matter. I have no further information to provide at this time.”
Central Command oversees the skirmish in the Middle East, but before you start screaming about joining up with the cell or cutting people’s heads off, remember: this is their social media stuff that was hacked, not their TOP SECRET files. This is closer to an asshole stealing Little Caesar’s coupons out of your curbside mailbox than someone making phone calls to the babysitter … from inside the house!
A similar hack allegedly occured on the CIA’s social media recently, though, so there is that.
