It seems that television has finally started to realize that the internet is a bottomless well of exceptional talent. Glee, the dark Horcrux that binds Ryan Murphy to our world, kicked off its six and final season last Friday by adding some fresh blood to the cast. Among them is Noah Guthrie, the bluesy musician whose acoustic cover of “Sexy And I Know It” by LMFAO shot him to viral fame back in 2012.
Guthrie will play the part of Roderick, a new student with a passion for music and a remarkable singing voice. Something tells me that won’t be much of a stretch for the young musician whose voice has earned him over 58 million views and nearly half a million subscribers on his personal channel. A show like Glee depends on strong vocal performances, one of the reasons that Lea Michelle who plays Rachel Berry has been considered a breakout star of the ensemble cast. Guthrie’s pipe’s could give Michelle a run for her money as he more than proves in his first solo performance on “Mustang Sally”:
Noah is the latest YouTuber to make the jump to television but he won’t be the only digital star testing his mettle in primetime. Grace Helbig recently set the premier date for her upcoming talk show on the E! network and both The Fine Brothers and Epic Meal Time have already been enjoying success with their own respective TV projects A&E’s Epic Meal Empire and Nickelodeon’s React To That. Controversial creator Shane Dawson has already done a turn on STARZ filmmaker reality show The Chair and is currently developing a semi-autobiographical pilot, Losin’ It, for NBC.
