Hozier’s “Take Me to Church” slowly gained traction throughout the entirety of 2014, but seems to only have become a favorite song for YouTubers to cover in the past few months.

It’s one of those songs that’s really easy to get stuck in your head, but in more of an “everything I’m doing has phenomenal purpose life is epic and NOTHING CAN DESTROY ME except why is this broken pencil making my heart flutter with sadness” way than a “goddammit I want to throw my brain out a window to get this song out” kind of way.

You know?

Anyway, because of that, it’s a lot of fun to check out other people’s interpretations of it, and what better place for that than YouTube? So I watched a bunch and made an absolute definitive ranking of the top nine cover songs that nobody can argue with because it is very right. Check it out!

RUNAGROUND‘s cover of the song is fairly straightforward, but it’s fantastically done and adds some nice musical twists to the original.

8. Megan Davies & Matt Wright

This stripped-down duet by Megan and Matt gets everything right without overdoing it.

7. Kensington

A rock cover of “Take Me to Church” isn’t something you’d necessarily think that you need, but damn it if Kensington‘s doesn’t work incredibly well.

6. Sam Tsui & Kurt Schneider

Sam & Kurt admittedly get bonus points for using an organ and shooting in a parking garage, but at its core, this cover still sounds amazing, bonus points or not.
