UPDATE 4:04pm PST:
It seems that Saban Entertainment is not as thrilled with the fan film as we are.
No true 90’s kid can pass up a chance to talk about The Power Rangers. The five teens with attitude are a perfect encapsulation of everything that was amazing about 90’s pop culture: bright colors, karate, and giant robots punching foam rubber monsters. What more could you want? While the Rangers have seen dozens of incarnations over the years, the original series will always hold a special place in fans’ hearts. But the unspoken truth is … it hasn’t aged well. The premise, the acting, and especially the action scenes are all showing their age. While that goofiness is part of the show’s charm, it’ll take more than that to win over a modern audience. In fact, there’s already a movie reboot in the works set for this summer, but the studio may as well pack up their cameras, because filmmaker Adi Shankar has already perfected the form.
Shankar is already well-known for his intense, action-packed reboots of iconic properties. His series of unofficial bootlegs already includes Marvel’s Punisher, Spiderman villain Venom, and the futuristic vigilante Judge Dredd. Now he’s brought his gritty touch to the Power Rangers franchise, placing all the characters from the original series in a violent, blood-spattered dystopian future. Inside some slick CGI and amazing action sequences, Shankar ponders an interesting question. What would five teenagers recruited to fight as soldiers in an intergalactic war against moon witches and robot empires on a daily basis really grow up to be? The answer, logically, is some violent damaged adults who struggle to adjust to civilian life.
The film stars James Van Der Beek (Dawson’s Creek, Don’t Trust The B* In Apartment 23) and Katie Sackhoff (Battlestar Galactica), who bring powerful performances to this surprisingly dark and gripping reimagining of the Power Rangers mythology.
