Rooster Teeth Animator Monty Oum Passes Away

Early this morning, Rooster Teeth announced that 33-year-old animator Monty Oum had passed away due to a “severe allergic reaction during a simple medical procedure” which put him into a coma.

Oum was best known for the animated series “RWBY” which he produced, wrote, and animated.

However, Oum has been shaping the culture of gaming animation for years. He first caught everyone’s eye with “Haloid,” a video which pit Samus Aran against Master Chief in a grueling battle to the death.

After that, he created the fighting series “Dead Fantasy” which spanned over six episodes of masterful animation that mashed together characters gamers wish had teamed up years ago.

Rooster Teeth’s Burnie Burns met Oum at a panel and the rest was history. Oum became an integral part of the team, animating seasons 8 and 9 of “Red vs. Blue” before he released what would become the channel’s most popular series.

Rooster Teeth said this, in regards to honoring the memory of their comrade:
“In lieu of flowers or gifts, we ask that you simply do something creative. Use your imagination to make the world a better place in any way that you can. If you know Monty like we do, then you know he would certainly be doing that if he were able to.”

Oum touched the lives of gamers all over, and we’re saddened by his passing. Our hearts go out to his family, his friends, and his fellows at Rooster Teeth. The internet won’t be the same without him.
