YouTubers In Hollywood Movies — NMR Recasts: The Wizard of Oz

Since we’re weekend warriors now, it only makes sense that we break from the pack and engage in some rampant free-thinking. Pretty soon YouTube and Hollywood should completely merge and we will be seeing our favorite YouTubers starring in our favorite TV shows and movies. Of course, until that point, we can only speculate on what might have been had this merger happened 10, 20 or 500 years ago. So every weekend, we take a pop culture movie and recast it with YouTubers who we think might have worked perfectly in that role.

This week: The Wizard of Oz

Arguably the greatest movie of all time, The Wizard of Oz has a little something for everyone — including a whole shoe fetish thing for you weirdos out there. The tale of a girl who gets whisked away by a twister to the magic land of Oz (or is it all a dream? ooh), this black-and-white-into-color masterpiece is long overdue for a recasting (remind me to do Top Gun next week though). Here are the YouTubers we think could best fill the roles:

Dorothy

Played in the movie by: Judy Garland
Played in our version by:  Mary Kate Wiles

Mary Kate, the darling of YouTube with her red hair, sweet singing and wholesome disposition. She pretty much is a YouTube version of Dorothy Gale. Now if only we could get a cover of her singing “Somewhere Over the Rainbow.”

Scarecrow

Played in the movie by: Ray Bolger
Played in our version by: Gunnarolla

Ah, the one without wits. This could be an easy burn, but we here at NMR only seldomly go for the low-hanging fruit. So instead, we choose to focus on an actor who can slip into the role rather than somebody who embodies a real life imbecile. Repeat: we do not think Gunnarolla is an imbecile; he could just do a bang-up job of pretending to be one.

Tin Man

Played in the movie by: Jack Haley
Played in our version by: Phil Defranco

The one with an axe and no heart. Okay, I just got done with my low-hanging fruit speech and here I am confronted with another opportunity for a good burn. Do I take the high road or the low? Let’s just say Phil Defranco works here.

Cowardly Lion

Played in the movie by: Burt Lahr
Played in our version by: Steve Zaragoza

This is the role Steve was born to play. I caught a bunch of flack for casting him as Luke Skywalker in my Star Wars recast (a move I stand behind, btw). But because people are so sizist, maybe they will accept his work here as the Cowardly Lion more? Hopefully he’s also hairy enough for you monsters. Normally our work has us including Harley Morenstein and some might argue for him to be cast here. I don’t think there is anything cowardly about Harley. At least, I don’t have the guts to ask him to his face…

Toto

Played in the movie by: Terry
Played in our version by: Mr. Marbles

Jenna Marbles’ dog Mr. Marbles works perfectly here.

The Wizard

Played in the movie by: Frank Morgan
Played in our version by: Cenk Uygur

Cenk Uygur easily could step into the role of a giant screaming head surrounded by fire. He does less well with the aging gadfly behind the curtain working the knobs and spindles, but our Wizard is Great & Powerful and naturally, so is Cenk on the YouTube scene.

Wicked Witch of the West

Played in the movie by: Margaret Hamilton
Played in our version by: Grav3Yard Girl

I love Bunny, er, Graveyard Girl — she’s one of the best YouTube channels going and she’s one of the few insanely out-there people who could pull off this role.

Glinda the Good Witch

Played in the movie by: Billie Burke
Played in our version by: Madilyn Bailey

Can you imagine sweet smiling Maddy Bailey as anything but the GOOD witch? She’s enchanting, that’s for sure.

Hate our choices? Think we’re way off base? Can you think of someone better? Let us know who you’d re-recast. Also share this article because hypotheticals like this are awesome.
