UPDATE (3/20/15 4:39 PM EST): So good news! We’ve gotten some feedback from the fine folks at Cinefix regarding this here story. Turns out it is the tail that wagged the dog. It’s BECAUSE the lovely Makenzie is moving on that Cinefix has decided to retire WTWBUD. Because I am lazy, I think its best if I sit back and let Cinefix’s Michael Cruz tell it:
(Mackenzie Wahl) has been a long time producer, partner, writer, AND host on both Tasted and Cinefix and has chosen to move on to greater endeavors. The show never really picked up steam, but we still had no intention of cancelling it because it’s awesome and we love it, and we always kind of thought, “whatever… it’s awesome, people will catch on eventually and roll back and watch the old ones.” and anyway who cares, there’s a core group of people that loves it and hopefully that will grow.
We may or may not bring W2WBUD back with a different host. We personally don’t want to because it was Mack’s baby – she did all the research, writing, costuming, and producing of it, but fans are asking for it to continue.
We are looking for a new member of the Cinefix gang but it still feels weird to have them host HER show and would rather give whoever said new girl is a new show she can conceive on her own.
So there you go. The real details straight from the source. Once again, the tools of the online journalism trade: innuendo, conjecture, hyperbole and sensationalism have fallen against the almighty truth. Damn, this update was longer than the actual article.
Cinefix is a revelation in online movie knowledge, but even they couldn’t figure out how to make people care about their video bucket list. What To Watch Before You Die, a handy dandy series that as the title implied, showcased “must-watch” films to the general YouTube public, made it five “seasons” if we count in 12 episode batches. During that time, the show only amassed view counts in the 10,000 range.
Hosted by Mackenzie Wahl, who is leaving the channel, the series aired its final episode yesterday, with Mackenzie saying her goodbyes and the channel looking back over its best moments. The final video telling us what we should actually watch was an episode featuring the cult classic The Big Lebowski.
Naturally, we will miss Mackenzie, but we feel like we’ll be seeing her on another channel soon. And as for What To Watch Before You Die, you taught us well; you were just too beautiful for this ugly world.
Goodnight, sweet prince.
