Unless they’re into fashion or makeup, it isn’t always easy for women to find online content that’s geared toward them. Particularly in genres like science fiction, there aren’t enough creative projects out there that connect with women’s experiences in a meaningful way. So it’s encouraging when women in filmmaking team up to create the stories they want to see.
In that spirit, we’ve been looking forward to “Spore,” a sci-fi short film starring Mary Kate Wiles and Ashley Clements. The “Lizzie Bennet Diaries” and “Muzzled the Musical” co-stars reunited to shoot the Patreon-funded film at YouTube Space LA several months ago, and the final cut premiered on Mary Kate’s channel on March 27.
Mary Kate plays Perry Spore, a space explorer who returns to an abandoned, ravaged Earth on a scientific mission. Ashley plays Cal, a strange woman Perry encounters after the mission goes horribly wrong. Whatever happened to Cal — and whatever is in store for Perry — it doesn’t appear to be pleasant.
Ashley, who won a Streamy for her performance on “The Lizzie Bennet Diaries,” discussed the project during a recent video on Mary Kate’s channel. “When I got the script, I was like, yes. No-one’s ever asked me to do anything like that before. It’s totally different and I found that very exciting. And it was a blast to shoot.”
Contributing to the women-centric theme, the film was produced by Whitney Milam, digital producer of “School of Thrones” and the Streamy Award-winning web series “Storytellers,” and written by Taylor Brogan.
Mary Kate announced the film a couple of weeks ago, saying, “Very excited to show you everyone’s hard work, and hope you will be excited to see it.”
