Sometimes all you need is to rewatch a favorite YouTube video to boost your spirits. For Throwback Thursday, we’re focusing on the videos that make us smile.
“Everything is Awesome!” How can those words not spur you on to feel great? Detractors love to point out that it is a tool for 1984 style conformity. But you know what? Per my understanding of the song from YouTubers The Lonely Island and musicians Tegan & Sara, that’s awesome! Not only is the Lego Movie an instant classic, but this song has replaced that Pharrell song in my repertoire for feeling good (before that was “Hey Ya” — I am exactly what record executives look for).
Long story short, I am a total conformist. Everything is awesome, everything is cool when you’re part of a team …
For this week’s Throwback Thursday we were asked for a video that makes us happy. Lucky for me I didn’t have to throw it back very far to find one, so come with me on a journey all the way back to last week. One week ago today we lived in a world without Unbreakable Kimmy Schmidt and that world was dark indeed. Today, one week on, most of us have made it through Kimmy at least once and the truly dedicated (me) are already on their second bingeing cycle. I don’t know if it’s genuine love at this point or just Stockholm Syndrome, but I do know that from now on whenever I need cheering up I’ll be throwing back to the Kimmy Schmidt theme song. Recorded in the internet friendly songify style of the Gregory Brother’s and performed here in an extended version on their Schmoyoho channel, this video is just what you need to feel a little unbreakable yourself.
When I’m in the mood to let YouTube cheer me up, my go-to subjects are 1) cute animals being cute and 2) surprise homecomings. So if I REALLY need cheering up, this video of a dog crying with joy after her owner returns from Afghanistan does the trick.
It would completely uncharacteristic if I didn’t choose a video of drag queens, so, I picked a video of drag queens. This comes from Season 5 of RuPaul’s Drag Race, and is definitely my favorite lipsync battle. Alyssa Edwards and Roxxxy Andrews take to the dance floor to werk. And they most certainly do. This video never fails to cheer me up. If, by the end of this video, I’m not smiling or cheering these girls on, I’m probably dead.
