“Gangnam Style” was the first video to reach a billion views (also two billion) on YouTube. Then Justin Bieber’s “Baby” hit last year. YouTube started doing some number crunching recently and realized that they had a THIRD video in the billion views club. No, it wasn’t Katy Perry’s “Dark Horse,” which is heading there (900+ million views) or Psy’s other hit “Gentleman” (800+ million views). For this one, you have to go back to 2007.
First released in Hungary, “I’m A Gummy Bear,” a teeth-rottingly sugary repetitive pop techno song is actually the third video to cross into the billion views club. Of course, unlike the other two, you have to add a couple different accounts together to arrive at its 1.1 billion view tally, but the views are there and it totally counts.
See, the song has been uploaded in a dozen different languages — the English language version alone has 531 million views on the ICanRockYourWorld channel.
With Psy being Korean, Bieber being Canadian and this song coming from Hungarian origins, it looks like we need Katy Perry to step up her game to get an American on the YouTube chart that really matters.
