What do you get when you throw hipster music icons like Diplo, Jillionaire, Walshy Fire, and Vampire Weekend’s Ezra Koenig in a blender and add a dash of Andy Samberg? If you’re speaking literally then you get gross slurry of human goop. Don’t ever do that! However, if you’re speaking metaphorically then the result of that pop culture smoothie is Major Lazer. The character, originally designed as a mascot for Diplo’s musical side project with fellow DJ/Producer Switch, is coming to TV this month in his own animated series.
The over the top character was meant to be an avatar for Diplo and Siwtch’s reggaton dance hall collaboration, but has since taken on a life of his own. Thanks in no small part to fans, and to Fox’s Animation heavy YouTube channel Animation Domination High Def, the Major is coming to TV with his own 80’s inspired cartoon. The show will feature a style of low-fi animation familiar to anyone who grew up on 80’s cartoons like GI Joe, but expect the content to be a little less wholesome and straightforward. The episodes are expected to be as zany as the character himself.
Adult animation is having a major mainstream resurgence thanks in large part to Cartoon Network’s Adult Swim. FXX, the Fox owned network has been in on the act for some time hosting the animated hit Archer and incubating numerous other animated projects on the ADHD YouTube channel. Major Lazer will be the first to graduate to TV screens and the show will have major star power behind it. In addition to the creators, expect the show to feature the voices of Oscar winner J.K. Simmons, comedians Andy Samberg and Aziz Ansari and musicians Charli XCX, Riff Raff, and Vampire Weekend’s Ezra Koenig. Major Lazer himself will be voiced by Adewale Akinnuoye-Agbaje who is best known for playing Mr. Ecko on Lost.
Major Lazer premiers on FXX April 16th but in the meantime you can catch up on the music that inspired the series on Spotify, and watch an early version of the show over on the Animation Domination HD YouTube channel.
