Dramatic times on the Twitters today as two of its more entertaining celebrities, Avengers: Age of Ultron director Joss Whedon and ethereal being Jaden Smith, vanished from the social media site almost without warning.
Joss Whedon deleted his Twitter account with the parting message, “Thank you to all the people who’ve been so kind and funny and inspiring up here,” leaving Avengers, Buffy the Vampire Slayer and Firefly fans to argue with each other about what drove him off.
The prevailing theory is that Whedon got fed up with online criticism of Age of Ultron, which hit theaters on Friday, and particularly of his portrayal of Scarlett Johansson’s character Black Widow. Wade into the spoiler-infested depths of Twitter and Tumblr at your own risk, but some feminist critics felt that Whedon had reduced Black Widow to a romantic interest and damsel in distress — and with Whedon easily accessible on Twitter, they apparently didn’t hesitate to give him a piece of their minds.
Whedon’s supporters aren’t very happy about the news.
Yep. There is a “Tea Party” equivalent of progressivism/liberalism. And they just chased Joss Whedon off Twitter. Good job, guys. Ugh.

Joss Whedon quit Twitter and I blame all of the crying nerd babies out there who didn’t think Age of Ultron was gritty enough. — Neil McNeil (@Neil_McNeil) May 4, 2015
Not surprised to hear Joss Whedon quit Twitter, people were such maniacs in response to him. I hate when the internet gets sour & mean.

The internet was dealt an even harsher blow when Jaden Smith’s account also vanished, robbing us of one of the most delightfully weird streams of consciousness known to man.
JADEN SMITH DELETED HIS TWITTER????? NOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO — Nathan Zed (@TheThirdPew) May 4, 2015
I don’t care about Joss Whedon leaving Twitter, I wanna know why Jaden Smith left us to struggle alone in the cold.

Jaden Smith quit Twitter so now none of us are going to know when the world is going to end or how we’re going to die. — Alex Goldschmidt (@alexandergold) May 4, 2015
gonna be traumatic when my grandkids ask what it was like to be alive when jaden smith was tweeting & i respond with sobs.

Not everybody appreciated the tragedy of the situation, however.
Joss Whedon deleted his Twitter account. But so did Jaden Smith. Cosmic checks and balances also extend to social media. — Matt Fowler (@TheMattFowler) May 4, 2015
At least Jacksfilms is here for us.
Just because Jaden Smith deleted his twitter doesn’t mean we have to stop tweeting like him. https://t.co/S7bVvPlhdj
