For some reason the Meninist movement particularly seems to gall people — more than most troll topics. With nasty, mean-spirited commentary on gender equality, the @MeninistMen account on Twitter has 84.9 thousand followers, both fans and enemies. It’s essentially an antifeminist movement that relies on lowbrow humor. But the account wasn’t always as vitriolic as it is now.
In fact, it used to be a One Direction fan account. And not just a run-of-the-mill fan account … one of those “I BURN with the passion of a thousand suns for One Direction” type fans.
Apparently it was discovered when someone went crawling into the recesses of @MeninistMen’s past, looking through their old tweets. It took them back to 2012 to find anything, back when the account was allegedly named @AdmirableNiall and the owner of the account pined for all things 1D. Here are just some of the tweets that the hecklers are unearthing:
I think we’re either looking at the wide emotional swings of a boy (a “narry lad”) trying to figure himself out in life and overcompensating each which way he turns — or a master troll who has been building this account for years and we’ve all fallen into the most trolliest part of his grand design … no, it’s definitely the first thing.
I think it’s safe to say at the heart of every aggressive Meninist lies the quick-beating heart of a spurned boy band fanatic. It will be interesting to see how this account goes forward.
