2. Yup, that’s a Guitar Behind Him
On The Colbert Report he once famously accepted a guitar duel challenge from The Decemberists but cut his hand before it could begin. He was replaced by Peter Frampton for the win. But Colbert ACTUALLY can play the guitar, so when you hear him doing his unique version of Camptown Races, that’s actually him playing along.
According to Wikipedia: During the 1980s, he was the lead singer and guitarist of an ABC-like new wave band called “Stephen and the Colberts”.
So music might well be an important aspect of his Late Show showmanship.
3. No Late Night Television Host has ever rocked a beard
From Johnny Carson to Ed Sullivan to David Letterman to Jay Leno to Jimmy Kimmel to Chevy Chase to Joan Rivers to Jimmy Kimmel to Jimmy Fallon, Steve Allen, Dick Cavett and Jack Paar, Arsenio Hall and many, many others, no Late Night Show host has ever regularly rocked a beard. Sure Conan and Dave Letterman both dabbled briefly, but if you want to work in Late Night, you gotta let your cheeks breathe apparently.
