Chris Farley’s Version of Shrek Leaked on YouTube

People always debate wheter the leaking of media is hurtful or helpful. Obviously the people of Sony feel differently than I, but this footage of Chris Farley as Shrek begs to differ.

See, I always, always used to wonder what Chris Farley would have brought to the role. Don’t get me wrong, I love Mike Myers — it’s just that Chris was the original voice on the project. He looked like Shrek, he was essentially Shrek.

Farley had roughly 90 percent of his lines recorded for the movie, but when he died, that footage went into the Dreamworks vault and I assumed that was the end of it. We’d never hear it, we’d always be left to wonder how his version stacked up.

But now that we do know, I can say unequivocally that Mike Myers was the right performer for this part. Chris is flat in his readings — the character has no oomph next to Eddie Murphy. Sure, it’s easy to say that because we’ve identified with Meyers’ own version for so long, but the proof is right there. Does that sound like an emotional voice, full of nuance and inflection? Or was Chris Farley more of an incredibly gifted physical comic and that doesn’t shine through in his voice-only performance here?
