Amazon Streaming is certainly feeling like they’ve got the Midas Touch lately …
After making hit shows out of Transparent and Catastrophe, they’ve now decided to bring Galaxy Quest to their Prime Video streaming service. For those of you who weren’t alive in 1999 or simply missed this cult movie that did surprisingly decent at the box office, it’s essentially The Three Amigos — in space.
As IMDB spins it, “The alumni cast of a space opera television series have to play their roles as the real thing when an alien race needs their help.” Yeah, a race of aliens takes their TV series for a documentary and, well, comedy ensues. There’s no word if any part of the original cast will return, but considering there are some big names that were attached to this flick — Tim Allen, Sigourney Weaver, Sam Rockwell and Allen Rickman, it’s likely that Amazon will just do a total reboot.
Paramount, who released the film in theaters, began shopping this as a television show concept last year. Apparently, Amazon was the fish that took the bait. It’s a funny enough concept for a movie, but can it be stretched into an entire series, let alone one that spans more than one season? Let’s see what they do with it.
