When your phone contract is almost up, trying to get the most out of it is an art in and of itself. You either threaten to leave the company or you give some sob story like, “Please lower my phone bill cost because I have no job and my dog broke his leg and my house blew up.” But this British man just brought maneuvering to a whole new level.
About a week ago, UK cell phone service O2 tweeted out this image:
Time for a slice of life. We’re delivering #O2Priority ???. Leeds and London, tweet your location with #waggytails. pic.twitter.com/H5EgELf44B
— O2 in the UK (@O2) August 3, 2015
And O2 customer and UK-er Dan May tweeted back at them, hoping to get free pizza. Unfortunately, he did not have success. Later on, O2 tweeted out another sweepstakes image and Dan May decided to take it up a notch.
Thankfully, O2’s rival, Three, decided to play along.
@ThreeUK would be a quite incredible hijack of @O2 ‘s campaign if you did. I’m getting cutlery ready as we speak.
— Dan May (@dpmay) August 3, 2015
The move has been made, and O2 refuses to be outplayed like this!
@dpmay We’d like to make your tail wag, how about free pizza for the rest of the year? Drop us a DM ? #waggytails pic.twitter.com/PHjD3h1L2y
— O2 in the UK (@O2) August 3, 2015
But Mr. May was chillin’ out, maxin’, relaxin’ all cool because Three seriously delivered.
.@O2 I hope this isn’t a cruel Monday joke, especially as @ThreeUK delivered big time! #waggytails #makeitright pic.twitter.com/mE90KbuzT5
— Dan May (@dpmay) August 3, 2015
But O2 refuses to surrender to this social skirmish.
@dpmay No joke, check your DM! Free pizza for the rest of the year ? #waggytails
— O2 in the UK (@O2) August 3, 2015
And like that, May just secured himself one pizza pie a week for the rest of the year. That’s definitely a win, especially on a Monday.
“I couldn’t believe it. I only sent out a couple of tweets and they both went all-out to compete against one another,” he told the Metro. “It’s a great marketing campaign, it really worked. I was really impressed with Three after being disappointed by O2 but they certainly won the customer back.”
Even though Three wasn’t able to win this battle against O2, they managed to get the last word.
@dpmay @O2 sorry, we just had to grab a pizza the action…we’re here all week! 😉
— Three UK (@ThreeUK) August 3, 2015
Ok, that was a cheesy pun, but overall, they did a grate job. (Get it? No? Ok, I’ll see myself out…).
