American Horror Story – 13 Guest Stars That Need to Come Back

At this point, Ryan Murphy could probably get Meryl Streep to make an appearance

While the show is not perfect, it is so original and bold it provides actors with a chance to really stretch their acting muscles. Like Sarah Paulson said,

The idea of being on a show where each season stands alone, and you can come back the next year and show an entirely different aspect of your personality or your talent or your anything is an enormous gift that you rarely get in television.

There have been many memorable guest stars, but not all of them made this list. Guests such as Adam Levine, Stevie Nicks, Eric Stonestreet and Patti Lupone were so memorable because they made special appearances. Bringing them back for more could dilute their original role (not that we’d be upset if they did end up returning).

So following is a list (in no particular order) of 13 guest stars that really shined and could potentially take on bigger roles in future seasons.

David Burtka

AHS David Burtka

He played the husband/manager of Jessica Lange’s character in Freak Show in the final episode of last season. Perhaps not the most memorable performances, but Burtka’s subtle charm and classic good looks provide a lot of potential for future roles in American Horror Story. He could even share the screen with his real-life husband…

Neil Patrick Harris

…Neil Patrick Harris. Doogie Howser, Barney Stinson, and magician extraordinaire. He played—what else—magician Chester Crebb in the two episodes prior to his husband’s performance in Freak Show. It would be great to see them onscreen together in future seasons, but we’ll take them separately if we have to.

Mena Suvari

AHS Mena Suvari

She played the Black Dahlia in Murder House and is known as the most “American” actress (for her work in American Beauty, three American Pie movies, and now American Horror Story). Perhaps next season could be a play on this? Regardless, she has the kind of distinct look Murphy seems to be drawn to, and a fairly good range that would allow her to tackle what’s thrown at her.

Joshua Malina

AHS Josh Malina

He played opposite Mena Suvari as her dentist/rapist/murderer in Murder House and is most recently known for Scandal, but perhaps best known for The West Wing. I, however, always think of Terminator: The Sarah Connor Chronicles. If he could find time in his busy schedule, he would be a welcome addition to future episodes of the series.

Clea Duvall

AHS Clea Duvall 2

It’s a shame Clea Duvall wasn’t included in Freak Show as an allusion to her fantastic work in Carnivale. However, she was much appreciated as girlfriend to Sarah Paulson’s Asylum character. While she was in a whopping five episodes (second only on this list to Grace Gummer and tied with Jenna Dwan Tatum), she has the chops to handle an even bigger role. She’d be great as a season protagonist.

Franka Potente

AMERICAN HORROR STORY I Am Anne Frank, Pt. 1 -- Episode 204 (Airs Wednesday, November 7, 10:00 pm e/p) -- Pictured: (L-R) Sarah Paulson as Lana Winters, Franka Potente as Kassie -- CR: Byron Cohen/FX

“I am Anne Frank”. This was one of the most memorable guest characters, which might mean she should stay as a guest, but frankly (no pun intended), more from Potente would not go unappreciated. Maybe she can return in American Horror Story: Frankly I Don’t Give a Frank?

Jenna Dewan Tatum

AHS Jenna Dewan Tatum

She starred opposite Adam Levine in Asylum as one-half of the doomed couple whom visits the remains of the asylum in present day. She’s obviously beautiful, but it could be interesting to cast her in a new role that goes beyond that, maybe add some darkness. Bonus points if they integrate her dance skills.

Patti LaBelle

AHS Patti LaBelle

Sure, Patti LaBelle is iconic. Which might put her in the category of those that should be known for their one role on the show. However, her role wasn’t as memorable as one might hope. She was Dandy’s first kill on Freak Show, but she had barely any screen time and it left us wanting more.

Grace Gummer

AHS Grace Gummer

Grace Gummer has actually played two characters on American Horror Story, becoming a regular in Freak Show after her one-off in Coven. So maybe she’s not technically a guest star, but she would be a welcome addition in a larger role in the future. Plus, she can feel free to bring the rest of the Gummers, including Meryl. American Horror Story: American Gummers perhaps?

Alessandra Torresani

AHS Alessandra Torresani

Known largely for her starring role in the Battlestar Galactica prequel Caprica (and her guest role in Terminator: The Sarah Connor Chronicles if you’re me), Torresani is no stranger to genre television. So it’s a shame she was only in two episodes of Murder House, though her plot line is probably one of the most memorable along with the others in her group. She was one of the students that Tate (Evan Peters) killed in the school shooting. It’s been nearly four years since she last graced our American Horror Story screens so it’s about time she’s brought back, don’t you think?

Ashley Rickards

AHS Ashley Rickards

Another of Tate’s victims, Awkward. fans know her as Jenna Hamilton. She’s one of the most “normal” looking characters in American Horror Story, which makes her fairly peculiar in this universe. Bringing her back and giving her more to play with could be interesting. Plus, she’s a MENSA member, so all around it’s a smart idea.

Seth Gabel

AHS Seth Gabel

Husband of Bryce Dallas Howard, but an accomplished actor in his own right (Fringe, The Da Vinci Code, Arrow), Gabel has a unique look that fits right in with what American Horror Story is all about. Just like Criss, we only first saw him recently, but are ready for more.

Darren Criss

Well, why not? He’s worked with Murphy before on Glee where he melted everyone’s hearts with his dancing, his smile, and his utter devotion to Kurt. Technically he hasn’t guest starred yet, so this choice is debatable, but after he starred as Hedwig (like someone else on this list), is there any doubt we’ll want more of Criss after next week’s episode?
