“The fans have no idea. It’s great they are talking, but nobody has a clue.”
So here’s the thing: dig deep enough into Star Wars forums, Reddit threads, supposed leaks, and interviews from the various people who’ve visited set at one point or another, and some fans think they have a pretty good idea of what The Force Awakens is actually going to be about. We maybe haven’t gone as far down the rabbit hole as some, but we’ve followed plenty of credible evidence ourselves and come up with what we consider to be some pretty plausible theories. For example, we think we know a few things that are likely to creep up in the next trailer, and we have a decent idea of which character is going to be a next generation Skywalker.
But then again, the movie isn’t out yet.
Star Wars: The Force Awakens leading man John Boyega, who plays Finn in the new film, said in an interview for V Man that he and director J.J. Abrams are basically just laughing at those of us who think we understand. “J.J. will send me YouTube clips of fans reacting to things online and it’s funny,” said Boyega. “The fans have no idea. It’s great they are talking, but nobody has a clue.”
Specifically, he said we’re in for some surprises with Finn and why it is we see him in Stormtrooper armor (as we do in the first teaser trailer). And although he wouldn’t elaborate, he said Finn has a “unique” and “never before seen” narrative, and is “in conflict, mostly with himself and also with the powers.” Which sounds oddly similar to Lawrence Kasdan’s remarks about a certain bad guy Finn is likely to lock lightsabers with:
There’s never been a character quite like the one [Kylo Ren] that Adam [Driver] plays. I think you’re going to see something that’s brand new to the saga…. He’s full of emotion. No matter how we express ourselves in the world, whether we hide it and act very calm or whether we’re very out there and demonstrative, everybody’s roiling with emotion. And you want your characters to be that way, too. Then they have to deal with their emotions as best they can, with what they are.
We’re pretty excited about the potential for shades of grey that Finn and Kylo Ren bring together. But we’re not quite sure we believe Boyega when he says we know nothing.
Guess we’ll find out December 18!
