And so begins the embarrassing task of evaluating the accuracy of my trailer predictions.
In case you missed it, a few weeks ago I made a few predictions about what would be in the theatrical trailer for Star Wars: The Force Awakens. So now that the trailer is actually out, we have (*shudder*) a perfect record for where I was spot on and (more likely) where I was chasing the wind.
What I got pretty much right
Let’s start with some positivity, some good news before the bad. Because really, there’s only one thing that I can say I was spot-on about.
Although to be fair, I was pretty spot-on about multiple parts of it.
I’m talking, of course, about the “Just a glimpse of a lightsaber fight.” Indeed, the trailer cuts right before blades meet in the showdown between Finn and Kylo Ren.
That’s all there is. And maybe that was an easy call, but here’s where I’m going to give myself a little extra credit.
In addition to saying that there would be a lightsaber fight in the trailer, I also wanted to get into what kind of fight it would be. Especially in the original trilogy, this was a really important question. Vader vs. Obi Wan, the former apprentice almost toying with the aged master whom he never thought to see again. An overeager Luke getting in a couple shots before completely getting his s*** pushed in. A resolutely calm, then scared and angry Luke playing familiar chicken with Vader while the Emperor watches. What was this fight going to look like?
Based on some quotes from J.J. Abrams and Lawrence Kasdan coupled with what we know about both Finn and Kylo Ren, I speculated this would be a fight between amateurs, a fight full of raw power, maybe, but no refinement. No calm.
What all this tells us is that Kylo Ren is probably still a relative beginner in the ways of the Force. He might be extremely powerful, but it’s raw power. He hasn’t been “educated” in either of the classical schools. He might even have been self-taught before joining up with mystics in the Knights of Ren.
Now throw Finn back into the mix, who we already know is a former stormtrooper who defected, and who we can see from the teaser trailers spends an awful lot of time in this movie running, not training as a Jedi. That’s two undertrained combatants.
And what do you know.
Kylo Ren might maintain his swagger for now, but I doubt he actually knows much more about what he’s doing than Finn. And Finn looks like what Luke would’ve if he’d had to fight Darth Vader at the end of Star Wars: A New Hope.
