Shockingly, having ads that can be skipped before the product is even mentioned has not monetized YouTube sufficiently. Which is why the video delivery site is introducing their premium version: YouTube Red.
Youtube Red is a subscription-based service. For $10/month subscribers will be able to enjoy all of the sites millions of videos completely ad-free. In addition, Red users will enjoy streaming music through the Google Music Play All Access service. There has also been talk of content accessible only to Youtube Red members, like exclusive access to films and shows produced by Youtube.
What is certain is that the market for subscription-based video has to be nearing saturation. Amazon Prime, Netflix, and Hulu already jockey for subscribers. While YouTube Red is clearly different, in that these are generally independently produced videos and not movies or TV series, expect to see ample comparisons between the four services in the months to come.
For those wanting to dip their toes in the water, Youtube is offering a free trial of its premium Red subscription service. To try out their Youtube Red Trial service for a month, go to Youtube.com/red, and click on the red “free trial” button.
