AMC gives audiences its first look at eagerly anticipated new series
AMC is ready to dive into the dark, edgy and supernatural with its adaptation of the cult Vertigo/ DC comic, Preacher by Garth Ennis and Steve Dillon. The show was developed by Seth Rogen, Evan Goldberg and Sam Catlin. Ennis and Dillon will act as executive producers.
The series stars Dominic Cooper (Captain America, Peggy Carter), Ruth Negga (Marvel’s Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D.) and Joe Gilgun (Misfits) who are no strangers to the world of geekdom.
Preacher was once deemed too violent and too dark for TV. Back in 2008 even HBO of all places passed on the property! However, AMC has found success in the past with HBO’s cast offs, like Mad Men, which put the network on the map and made it a cable contender. There is sure to be some controversy over the show’s subject matter, specifically the religious elements, but unlike NBC’s failed adaptation of Constantine, AMC isn’t afraid to take a risk with material, and won’t be forced to neuter (too much, it is still basic cable) its characters down to appease broadcast standards.
The show is about Jesse Custer a Texas preacher who loses his faith, but after merging with Genesis, the unholy offspring of an angel and demon, gains powers that rival God’s. Custer hits the road with his gun-toting ex-girlfriend Tulip and his best friend, an Irish vampire named Cassidy on a road trip to find God. Depending on how closely the show sticks to the comics, audiences can look forward to run-ins with rednecks, serial killers, prostitutes and the Angel of Death. Good times.
The show is set to premiere some time in 2016 and if Preacher can do for the supernatural what The Walking Dead did for zombies then AMC is set to have another monster hit on their hands. Check out the Preacher trailer, and tell us what you thnk in the comments.
