2016 Superhero Movies: Worst to Best

This was a tough call. Doctor Strange has an all-star cast (Benedict Cumberbatch, Tilda Swinton, Chiwetel Ejiofor, and Mads Mikkelsen to name a few), has ALL the buzz on the internet, and every official picture and production quote indicates that they’re going to knock the character out of the park with mind-bending comic accuracy and strong characterization.

That said, Doctor Strange‘s cast is bloated with major characters, including his three biggest villains, and it’s easy to see the production overextending itself. That it must tie into the MCU, likely by way of an Infinity Stone, condenses the universe while simultaneously giving the movie more objectives it has to hit. Director Scott Derrickson’s Sinister is a decent little horror flick, but the rest of his work leaves a bit to be desired, especially his last blockbuster, The Day the Earth Stood Still.

In Cumberbatch et al. we trust, though, and sort of like Guardians of the Galaxy was for Marvel’s cosmic action, Doctor Strange has big potential to feel like a major breath of fresh air introducing magic to the MCU.
