#1 – CAPTAIN AMERICA: CIVIL WAR
Was there any doubt?
The first trailer felt like the emotional culmination of the MCU in a way that Avengers: Age of Ultron promised, but didn’t always quite deliver. Tumblr is awash with people still stricken by the, “He’s my friend”/”So was I” exchange; the Cap/Winter Soldier vs. Iron Man fight looks intense; and everything about Civil War sells emotionally grounded political action-thriller. Everything that made Captain America: The Winter Soldier great.
With Winter Soldier, directors Anthony and Joe Russo proved that they could juggle a large cast of major heroes and villains without the movie feeling overwrought or stretched thin. The movie was politically charged with Patriot Act controversy and seemed to predict the Snowden scandal. The only criticism for Winter Soldier has been that its climax is a little too big for its britches, and that’s debatable.
Conversely, Civil War is already promising to be an Avengers-size movie that needs to begin setting the stage for Avengers: Infinity War and Ant-Man & Wasp. The Russo brothers have delivered before, and there’s all the reason to believe they’ll do so again. What’s more, Marvel’s shared continuity has already been established. The movie doesn’t need to set up dominoes, it only needs to knock them down. The only thing really working against this movie is whether or not you’re all that wild about the characters. And with the sound of the internet right now, the whole world is pumped.
Thanks to a shrewd production team, excellent writers, and fantastic directors, Captain America: Civil War will be the best superhero movie of 2016.
