#2 – Logan Lerman
Lerman has a long history of starring in a variety of teen drama and action films, including The Perks of Being a Wallflower and Percy Jackson and the Olympians: The Lightning Thief as well as more dramatic roles in films like Noah, 3:10 to Yuma, and (most recently) Fury. At 24 years old with a little bit of a baby face, his biggest challenge might be convincing the studio (and audiences) that he’s the savvy, independent figure Han Solo needs to be, but there’s definitely no lack of talent here.
Especially considering that this could end up being a multi-film role (let’s not pretend that if the first one goes well Disney/Lucasfilm won’t want to make several more Han Solo adventures), Lerman is definitely an actor that could grow with the role more than an older choice.
#1 – Ansel Elgort
Ansel Elgort is one of those up-and-coming actors the general public is still learning about; teen girls might recognize his face, but few people could name him. He’s acted in a variety of popular teen drama/action films in the last few years, including Fault in Our Stars, Divergent, Allegiant, and the 2013 reboot of Carrie. Ansel seems, for the most part, to be a fairly flexible actor with a decent repertoire of performances. However, most of his work has been aimed at the teen girl demographic, which gives us reason to wonder whether he could hold the attention of an adult audience. Taking on the mantle of Han Solo also demands he adopt some of the character’s trademark world-weariness we’ve only seen in spots so far.
Still, maybe it’s that very combination of optimism with a dark side that the studio will be looking for in a young Han Solo.
Bonus #1: Chris Pratt
We still want Star Lord/Andy Dwyer to become the next Han Solo. If Guardians of the Galaxy and Jurassic World isn’t sufficient evidence of Pratt’s potential, we don’t know what is.
Bonus #2: Tye Sheridan
See Logan Lerman for most of what you need to know about why Tye Sheridan is a good pick: Young, up-and-coming talented actor. His advantage? He’s shown a lot more capability to carry drama already, with roles in Mud and The Tree of Life. He may not be on the official shortlist, but we sure think he ought to be.
